I was able to install nvidia-340 from the Ubuntu archive, add the PPA,
and then upgrade to the nvidia-355 drivers from the PPA without removing
python-pycuda with the following command:

sudo apt-get install nvidia-355 libcuda1-355 nvidia-opencl-icd-355 ocl-
icd-libopencl1 nvidia-cuda-toolkit

Unfortunately, I couldn't test any further as my card is not supported
by the nvidia-355 driver.

** Changed in: pycuda (Ubuntu)
       Status: New => Invalid
