Public bug reported:
After a fresh kubuntu 15.04 install, sddm didn't show a login screen, but only
a text mode message "Starting version 219".
Seems many people had the issue, some reported as a systemd bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/+bug/1432171
The issue was actually, that after a fresh install, sddm autologin was set to
user "oem". I removed the user and replaced it with my usual account. I think
this is what many people do.
The problem is that sddm still tries to autologin to now non-existent user
"oem".
The condition is visible from /var/log/sddm.log
[09:42:47.765] (II) DAEMON: Display server started.
[09:42:47.785] (II) HELPER: [PAM] Starting...
[09:42:47.785] (II) HELPER: [PAM] Authenticating...
[09:42:47.795] (II) HELPER: [PAM] returning.
[09:42:47.811] (WW) HELPER: [PAM] acctMgmt: Authentication failure
[09:42:47.811] (WW) DAEMON: Authentication error: "Authentication failure"
[09:42:47.812] (II) HELPER: [PAM] Ended.
[09:42:47.815] (WW) DAEMON: Auth: sddm-helper exited with 1
The problem is, that sddm does not report this as an error message. It
simply hangs with "Starting version 219" as the last message. Hard to
guess by the user what happened.
sddm must not assume that the autologin user exists. You can set
autologin in the system settings only to existent accounts, but you can
also remove these accounts after setting autologin.
