BOOM...problem solved...

I tested under a Guest session, and that did not reproduce the error,
which obviously points to something in my environment, as you obviously
already know.

So, I had a shortcut to switch keyboard layouts set to Shift-L, Shift-R
(hit both shifts together).  That seems to be the culprit.  Removing
that shortcut solves it.  No idea what is going on there, and it only
seems to affect Terminator's editing of these items, but it appears to
be Unity's fault.

Thanks for the heads up into other stuff to look at.
