Hi all. I too had the problem, much the same way as I had with 14.04 LTS some 
months ago. 
This time I followed this post and managed to uninstall fglrx-* packages and 
get my system to boot again:

But anyways, I agree with those who said that it's unpleasant to be
faced with the issue of a non-functioning system basically within the
last 3 releases or something. It could be OK for non-LTS releases,
because you know you're about to get the bleeding edge software, but I
hope that would not come again on the next LTS :)

In the meantime, a huge THANKS to all the people involved in the fix.
