I am using xubuntu, and it requires 3 clicks from the release
announcement to find any reference to this issue. You have to go to:

http://xubuntu.org/news/xubuntu-15-10-release/ then click to

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WilyWerewolf/ReleaseNotes#Known_issues

At least now I know to go back to open source drivers fully before
upgrading in the future.  Thanks to everyone here for the helpful info.
