More testing:
 1. laptop-mode only worked fine in the casper chroot as long as proc was
mounted. If not, it will report no laptop, since it doesn't find /proc/acpi.
Then xresprobe will use ddc and return:
laptop: ; ddc: yes
attempting DDC detection

1b. tried dpkg-reconfigure with this and continued booting. Now X
failed and I got the failsafe X configurator (which wouldn't let me
choose 1680 resolution even if I picked "1680 LCD screen", but that's
another story). But I eventually got a lockup (compiz?unionfs?) Looking
at the old xorg.conf it seems like dpkg-reconfigure had picked vesa
(maybe because it didn't see the ati card without /proc).

I guess casper mounts /proc before configuring X so all the above is not
a practical problem.

 2. tried booting up normally, then dpkg-reconfigure. I got the same
xorg.conf as the one casper makes. Good. That was half of the original
bug report solved.

 3. I then modified laptop-detect to always return false, and ran
dpkg-reconfigure. I got the same xorg.conf as in (1b) except now with ati and
it worked. It had added Modes "1680x1050" and correct sync ranges to xorg.conf
(and omitted synaptics), compared to the one in (2).
3b. Tried xresprobe, which then will always use ddc and return "1680" whether
I force crt, lcd or laptop.

FWIW, I also tried with the new xresprobe 0.4.24ubuntu5. Same results. I
can provide logs and debug output from most of the tests.

(After all this testing, my video card is a little fscked up after
warmstart and I am typing this in vesa and stretched widescreen. I'll
have to unplug battery and power to get ati to work right again I
guess.)

So the conclusion is still the same: xresprobe fails, and that's ok for
the new ati driver.
