Getting similar problems here. Ubuntu, 2.6.22-12-generic kernel on an
IBM Thinkpad R32

The laptop had XP on it up until yesterday, I used a 512mB "no-name" USB
memory stick to copy some files out from XP before I wiped the drive.
Transferred the stick to my desktop PC (running Vista), it was detected
and installed then I copied my files off the drive with no problems.

Installed Ubuntu on the laptop, no problems during the install. Plugged
my USB stick into the desktop PC, copied a few files onto it and plugged
it into the laptop. Fully expected to see the drive pop up after it was
detected, nothing appeared. After a quick google for USB problems with
Ubuntu, I had a poke around in dmesg and spotted similar errors to those
posted above. I decided to put the USB stick back in my desktop machine
to make sure it was still working, then Vista told me that it had found
an "Unknown Device" and that it was installing software for it. Then I
got the "USB Device Not Recognised" box along with the suggestion that I
should replace the device, pretty much confirming (for me) what Joel has
said about this bug frying devices. I've tried the stick in three
different machines (2 XP Pro and 1 Vista) with the same result.

Unfortunately, I don't have any more USB storage devices that I can test
this out with (not that I actually *want* to fry some hardware). I
haven't had any problems using my USB keyboard and mouse with Ubuntu,
although I'm not sure how relevant that is. I've used this particular
USB stick with Linux on a Thinkpad R32 before (Fedora 7 if I recall
correctly). I don't know what kernel version that was though and I no
longer have access to the machine. However, since the stick was working
the whole time I had XP on the machine, I would be inclined to rule out
hardware failure.

I don't know if this actually adds anything to this bug report other
than some more for people to read, but if anybody wants me to post any
log extracts, etc I'll be glad to help out. I'm just happy that I
didn't decide to plug in my digital camera first!
