I upgraded from Feisty to Gutsy Beta and I have exactly the same problems as described above. But for me the gnome applets startet to refuse working on distribution upgrade. Within the upgrade process I recognized a message that some applets could not be loaded. After rebooting everything worked just fine until I logged out for the first time.
@Sebastien: I confirm that stopping the running bonobo-activation-server before the new login makes it work correctly. I did not try it out by killing evolution-data-server but I am sure it would work as well.
