I'm having what looks like the same problem, but don't have mod_python
installed. The tail end of my error_log.1 reports:

[Sun Oct 07 07:19:29 2007] [warn] child process 11640 still did not exit, 
sending a SIGTERM

sending a SIGTERM

sending a SIGTERM
[Sun Oct 07 07:19:46 2007] [error] child process 11640 still did not exit, 
sending a SIGKILL
[Sun Oct 07 07:19:46 2007] [error] child process 11632 still did not exit, 
sending a SIGKILL
[..snip..]
[Sun Oct 07 07:19:46 2007] [error] child process 12389 still did not exit, 
sending a SIGKILL
[Sun Oct 07 07:19:46 2007] [error] child process 11321 still did not exit, 
sending a SIGKILL
[Sun Oct 07 07:19:47 2007] [error] could not make child process 11640 exit,
