For reference this problem is very similar to #1577074
However, the laptop is simply booting to a black screen on 16.04, the
backlight is on but there is no display. Sound is working so I can hear
the ubuntu logon noise and can SSH from another machine.
During boot the screen on the laptop looks as if it is flashing off and
on trying to set modes or something similar, I'm guessing this is the
looping shown in the output below
