Linux hp-grey 4.4.0-28-generic #47-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jun 24 10:09:13 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux I have tried the following mainline kernels and they don't seem to have made any difference v4.7-rc5-yakkety/ v4.4.4-wily/ Running with nomodeset allows the GUI to show up in 800x600 but doesn't allow any resolution change.
