I'm seeing the same problems with an Inspiron E1505. Suspend just stops either with the screen turned off or with a blank screen and a blinking cursor. A hard reboot is required in either case. Suspend worked reasonably reliably on Feisty on this machine. I seem to remember getting a successful suspend on Gutsy before installing fglrx and xgl (both the repo versions). I'm not really in the mood to uninstall those now that I have compiz fusion and awn working nicely for me.
