The underlying error was:

IOError: [Errno 30] Read-only file system

There's a huge amount of this stuff in your syslog:

Jul 8 14:42:41 ubuntu kernel: [4295414.187000] scsi0: device overrun
(status a) on 0:15:0

... followed eventually by:

Jul 8 14:47:13 ubuntu kernel: [4295686.159000] ext3_abort called.
Jul 8 14:47:13 ubuntu kernel: [4295686.159000] EXT3-fs error (device sda1):
ext3_journal_start_sb: Detected aborted journal
Jul 8 14:47:13 ubuntu kernel: [4295686.159000] Remounting filesystem read-only

So, to translate, either your hard disk or your SCSI controller is
returning lots of errors, and eventually the kernel gave up and declared
your target filesystem read-only, which obviously makes it rather
difficult to install onto it. I'd check your disk, controller, and SCSI
termination.
