Moving the ~/.cache directory out of the way and restarting has me back up and running again.
The UI is completely reset, but I have title bars, the launcher, and other widgets as expected so that I can use my desktop again. mv ~/.cache ~/.cache-NOGOOD sudo reboot Maybe that will work for someone else.
