Note that there is a mechanism in chzdev dedicated to this purpose: whenever chzdev detects that the configuration of the root device was changed, it will attempt to run /lib/s390-tools/zdev-root-update (if available) to perform any distribution-specific steps necessary to activate those changes. See s390-tools/zdev/src/zdev-root-update.* for examples of how this can be done.
