An update...

- We haven't been able to get the LD_PRELOAD test working (we're
thinking maybe something is cleaning the environment before an exec)

- We're currently testing with a GLIBC build that uses distinct values
in adapt_count (see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/glibc/+bug/1640518/comments/79)
. If we get a crash where the damage includes the distinct value, that
will confirm this is our problem.

- In the mean time, we're also testing with a proposed fix (see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/glibc/+bug/1640518/comments/77).
So far we have NOT been able to reproduce the crash with that change.
