I fully agree on your proposal.Either the 9xxx driver as default, or a choice between them.
I've had this problem since the early beta of the 100.xx.xx driver and it is persistent in both Feisty and Gutsy. Had to reinstall Gutsy Rc and install the 9xxx with "manual" configuration. Although this might be the wrong fora, using the 100.xx.xx driver as default will hit newbies - trying Ubuntu for the first time - straight in the planet. I'm using a mainstream HP Pav 6xxx.
