Public bug reported:
I have the following network card:
*-network
description: Wireless interface
product: QCA9565 / AR9565 Wireless Network Adapter
vendor: Qualcomm Atheros
physical id: 0
bus info: pci@0000:03:00.0
logical name: wlp3s0
version: 01
serial: f0:03:8c:2c:95:95
width: 64 bits
clock: 33MHz
capabilities: pm msi pciexpress bus_master cap_list rom ethernet
physical wireless
configuration: broadcast=yes driver=ath9k driverversion=4.8.0-41-generic
firmware=N/A ip=192.168.0.21 latency=0 link=yes multicast=yes wireless=IEEE
802.11
resources: irq:19 memory:f7100000-f717ffff memory:f7180000-f718ffff
It worked fine before the upgrade, and still works fine if I boot on
version 4.8.0-41, but the card is not supported on Linux 4.8.0-44 and
-45. It doesn't even appear in `ifconfig -a`.
Indeed:
root@Alfred:~# dpkg --listfiles linux-image-4.8.0-41-generic | grep realtek
/lib/modules/4.8.0-41-generic/kernel/drivers/net/ethernet/realtek
/lib/modules/4.8.0-41-generic/kernel/drivers/net/ethernet/realtek/8139cp.ko
/lib/modules/4.8.0-41-generic/kernel/drivers/net/ethernet/realtek/8139too.ko
root@Alfred:~# dpkg --listfiles linux-image-4.8.0-44-generic | grep realtek
root@Alfred:~# dpkg --listfiles linux-image-4.8.0-45-generic | grep realtek
This is really bad for users: a minor upgrade breaks the network, and
once the network is broken it's very hard to get the next upgrade hence
for most beginners this breaks their Ubuntu install permanently.
Note that I'm sending this report from version -41 which doesn't have
the breakage for obvious reasons.
Thanks
