It turned out that it was more complicating than the above. I had to use the update-rc.d to disable and remove any vbox* and virtualbox under /etc/init.d.
But this didn't solve the problem either. I had to manually move these files outside the /etc/init.d (this is equivalent to deleting them but I was not sure).
