It sounds like you might have hit a gnome-shell crash, but we can't
debug the issue without any details of what/where crashed.
Please have a look in /var/crash/ and for each .crash file run something like:
ubuntu-bug /path/to/file.crash
** Changed in: gnome-shell (Ubuntu)
Status: New => Incomplete
** Tags added: black-screen
