Public bug reported:
Hi, I'm trying to install Ubuntu 17.10 on a Dell Latitude E6520 laptop from
2011.
It sports a hybrid graphic system (Optimus technology) with integrated Intel HD
3000 graphics and an Nvidia NVS 4200M Quadro discrete card(I would never buy a
new laptop with an Nvidia card again!).
I think it's what is called a muxless setup and in the BIOS I can decide
to swith on/off the Optimus technology which from the extended reading I
did should let the OS decide when to use the discrete graphics and when
not (for power savings). It should be perfectly supported under Linux
from what I read with the Nouveau FOSS drivers (I don't want to install
proprietary Nvidia ones, nor Bumblebee).
I can install boot/install a fedora system and use the virtual consoles
out of the box without any problem but when I install Ubuntu 17.10 when
I try to switch to another virtual console I only get a blank screen
with a blinking cursor. I tried to switch off the Optimus setting in the
BIOS and then everything works all right, except that this way I'm just
using the discrete card at all times (wasting extra power and generating
extra heat!).
