- Hi, I'm trying to install Ubuntu 17.10 on a Dell Latitude E6520 laptop from
2011.
- It sports a hybrid graphic system (Optimus technology) with integrated Intel
HD 3000 graphics and an Nvidia NVS 4200M Quadro discrete card(I would never buy
a new laptop with an Nvidia card again!).

I think it's what is called a muxless setup and in the BIOS I can decide
to swith on/off the Optimus technology which from the extended reading I
did should let the OS decide when to use the discrete graphics and when
not (for power savings). It should be perfectly supported under Linux
from what I read with the Nouveau FOSS drivers (I don't want to install
  proprietary Nvidia ones, nor Bumblebee).

- I can install boot/install a fedora system and use the virtual consoles
- out of the box without any problem but when I install Ubuntu 17.10 when
- I try to switch to another virtual console I only get a blank screen
- with a blinking cursor. I tried to switch off the Optimus setting in the
- BIOS and then everything works all right, except that this way I'm just
- using the discrete card at all times (wasting extra power and generating
- extra heat!).
