I've always thought that the US long term plan was to get the rest
of the less-technologically savvy world to burn through their
conventional oil as fast as possible (SUV's?), and then when they
reached a certain point, turn their own production up, thus checkmating
everyone.

I don't know how the history of the world will play out but the USA wins.
America has smarts, experience and almost unlimited resources.

What kind of opposition would the US have if their competitors/
enemies couldn't sell oil to trade for technology, expertise, armaments
and all of the other modern goodies that are essential to a
superpower? We are finding out now and I have to say its almost a
relief. I trust no other country with the future of humanity.

The USA is solid. Runners up- the UK, the EU, China, and maybe Brazil.
But none of these places have the freedom, power, diversity and open
society that America has.
