Unfortunately, I have since re-partitioned the disk. I had originally run
the Windows installer on a new drive where, if I remember correctly, it
created the following partitions:

sda1: UEFI partition (FAT32, 100MB, boot,esp)
sda2: MS Recovery partition? (FAT32?, 16GB)? <== Not sure about this one -
it was the default from the MS Win10 install
sda3: Microsoft reserved partition (unknown, 16.8MB, msftres)
sda4: MS Windows 10 (100GB, ntfs, msftdata)

I then booted the Artful ISO (17.10) and attempted to get the Ubuntu
installer to install on the remaining space (500GB SSD). This is where it
failed.

Apologies for not having more information. I was eventually able to get it
running by installing Ubuntu FIRST, and then Win10 with the following
partitioning:

Model: ATA Samsung SSD 850 (scsi)
Disk /dev/sda: 500GB
Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B
Partition Table: gpt
Disk Flags:

Number Start End Size File system Name
   Flags
 1 1049kB 256MB 255MB fat32
  boot, esp
 2 256MB 33.0GB 32.8GB ext4
 3 33.0GB 49.4GB 16.4GB linux-swap(v1)
 4 49.4GB 49.4GB 16.8MB Microsoft reserved
partition msftres
 5 49.4GB 500GB 451GB ntfs Basic data partition
   msftdata
