Sorry for not reporting version. I have Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS. Installed packages:
ii  gnome-flashback                            3.18.2-1ubuntu1
            amd64        GNOME Flashback application
ii  gnome-flashback-common                     3.18.2-1ubuntu1
            all GNOME Flashback application - common data files
ii  gnome-flashback-desktop                    1.325-0~eugenesan~trusty12
            amd64 The Gnome Flashback desktop system
ii  gnome-session-flashback                    1:3.18.2-1ubuntu1
            all GNOME Session Manager - GNOME Flashback session

I use flashback only in .xsessions as used from remote hosts using vnc.

Thanks for pointing out that I should have put
/usr/lib/gnome-flashback/gnome-flashback-metacity
in my .xsession rather than the commands I used.

cat /usr/lib/gnome-flashback/gnome-flashback-metacity
#!/bin/sh
if [ -z $XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP ]; then
  export XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP="GNOME-Flashback:Unity"
exec gnome-session --session=gnome-flashback-metacity
--disable-acceleration-check "$@"
