After some more testing I can add the following:

- The bug is consistently triggered by a suspend/resume cycle (sudo pm-suspend)
- An easier workaround instead of logging out and back in is to switch to a 
different VT and switch back.
- Right after resuming, the computer behaves as if the left mouse button was 
continuously pressed. For instance if the cursor is over selectable text when 
resuming, moving the mouse selects text as if the button was pressed. Actually 
pressing the button does nothing. 
- xev shows no message at all when pressing the left button. Moving the mouse 
or pressing the right button show the expected messages.
