Well that certainly is particularly odd.  In order to further root cause
why fwupd would be impacting this will need you to do the following:

1) Reinstall fwupd
2) Modify /lib/systemd/system/fwupd.service to add a "-v" to the execution 
command
3) Reboot the system (I know you can also reload the unit and restart service, 
but in case this is race condition related I want to see how it happens at boot)
4) Share the journal output for fwupd.service (journalctl -u fwupd.service)
5) Share your dmesg

Hopefully all of those details will be able to explain what's happening.
