Tested, `discover` on my hp dx6120 (mini-tower, pentium 4 dual core 2.8ghz, 3gb, nvidia 7600gt, installed x86 system), it loaded in ~15 seconds, with updates check it was ~35 s (which includes the 15 secs appearance time) On that machine I couldn't fault overlaying windows (tried featherpad, qterminal & vlc overlapping discover). I didn't see any problems here.
Testing on my dell latitude d610 (pentium m, 1gb, intel i915) using a 'live' system however it was very different. the first screen appeared in ~13 seconds, but the number of updates available took ~90 seconds, and it took ~123secs for the full page to draw. Note: I'm using 20181001 build sorry; I haven't updated it. On the 'live' running d610 though when I moved overlapping windows over discover, edging was left behind which it took a very noticeable time after I stopped moving before they disappeared. Given the specs of my d610 though - I don't consider this a problem, there is just a short (yes it's noticeable) delay before the discover window is re-drawn. I'm not sure if this is what James saw or meant, but it was the only glitch I saw (which I did not see on my installed system with better cpu & more ram). -- two images will be attached (one of featherpad, one of qterminal 'waved' over discover & then dropped..) Usage on the 'live' d610 system yes was painfully slow; and I could understand "borderline un-usable" being used to describe it. It crashed on me, and I noted the fan start & continue to run flat-out on the d610 (which I rarely notice), so discover appeared to make the system run pretty hard. I however had no issues on my installed x86 system. ** Attachment added: "featherpad window had been 'waved' across discover - some delay before screen re-draws" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/discover/+bug/1795632/+attachment/5196656/+files/lubu_1810_discover_featherpad.jpeg -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1795632 Title: 18.10 32-Bit: The 'Discover' software centre is Slow + Unstable.
