Absolutely baffling that it is allowed for stuff like this to be removed
without anyone considering the ramifications for the users... what is
software without usefulness to its users?

Anyway maybe the solution to this is an AppImage?  Compile a binary with
all dependent libs in the same folder and run the script.  Run it
directly regardless of what dist anyone is using.
