Bit of an update, there seems to be two different but linked problems....
I have downloaded qemu-system-86 ubuntu source and patched support back in for
zesty, all snapshots now work.
However I still cannot edit snapshots using virsh , get same error.
I then downloaded libvirt-clients ubuntu source and edited
libvirt-4.6.0/src/conf/domain_conf.c
Removing machine check , i.e. commenting out the 'goto error' failure in this
if;
if (STRNEQ_NULLABLE(src->os.machine, dst->os.machine)) {
I can now edit the snapshots ok (e.g. change machine to cosmic) so they
work with original or patched qemu.
