Same problem here. I'm using - system: Ubuntu Desktop 18.04 LTS - machine: Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Extreme (Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti graphic card) - Thinkpad Thunderbold 3 docking station - external monitor (display port from docking station)
I'm booting with the lid closed.
