So unless Ubuntu gave up on Bug #1, the suggestion to use a custom patched kernel is not even close to being acceptable. If there is a chance, that Ubuntu can work properly on this broken boxes, Ubuntu has to take this chance!
One of the reasons Ubuntu is used and Ubuntu is recommended was its working out of the box behavhior. It was received as THE Linux for the masses. I really hope that mantra hasn't given up in the meantime.
