I think the bug is much weirder than it looked originally. It seems to
be related to how the applications start.

I face the same problem both with vlc and keepassxc snaps. All other
snaps on my system work without any problem.

Here is what does not work:
1. Boot the system
2. Login
3. Start VLC or keepassxc via Desktop shortcuts or via terminal.
4. "stack smashing detected" error is returned.

Every time I repeat the above process I get the same problem.

Here is what works:
1. Boot the system
2. Login
3. Start VLC or keepassxc by opening a file related to the application
4. The program works as expected.

It's worth noting that once you get the error message once, the program
won't open by trying to open associated files. Rebooting and opening a
file directly solves the problem.

@MarkA: Can you try what I write and see if this works for you?

@John Lenton: Could it be that snaps start differently depending on how
they are invoked (with and without arguments)? I have repeated the steps
listed above multiple times and I everytime it works (or does not work).
Is there any way I can provide debug info?
