Maybe if the issue with the GOOM visualization cannot be fixed, then a good alternative would be to remove the GOOM entry from the Rhythmbox visualization menu. libvisual-0.4-plugins might be a good alternative. Upon installing this package (not installed by default), a number of nice and well-working and responsive visualizations become available in Rhythmbox.
