PS: The OP mentioned Compitz. I don't think Compitz has anything to do
with it; for what it's worth, I have it disabled and I'm having the same
problem. I don't even think OpenGL is necessarily at fault -- OpenGL
works on my system, and I can use demanding OpenGL applications such as
Chromium B.S.U. I am using the mga graphics driver (Matrox Millennium
G450 DualHead graphics card), though I don't think the graphics drivers
are to blame either, it looks to me as if maybe GOOM is not installed
(correctly). I even manually installed the xmms-goom package in
Synaptic, but that didn't help either (I think Rhythmbox uses GStreamer,
but there isn't any other GOOM package in Synaptic).

UPDATE -- POSSIBLE FIX:
I just installed the gstreamer0.10-gl package, and this immediately fixed this
problem. It appears that the Rhythmbox should depend on gstreamer0.10-gl, but
it currently does not do so. Could this be changed?
