1. I installed the Ubuntu Stuidio from Synaptic, and I using this mode, so I think this installed vlc too.
2. (Thunar is more usable than Nautilus. But it is a Thunar bug. Thunar stops occasionally when multiple tabs are open. It was like 19.10.) So in Thunar, double-click or select and enter. But eg. mkvtoolsGUI is also waiting for approx. half a minute. 3.
