Sorry, I was going to call this incomplete as a poorly described bug but
I see it's actually not a bug after all.

 1. If you don't click on an item, i.e. you click on any of the
whitespace, you can focus the window without activating an item.

 2. With autoselection, you just mouseover to select. Alternately, you
can right click or control click.

 3. You can change the autoselect time and if you set it to 0, then you
disable it.
