Update: I got the same thing while trying to play a WMA audio file, instead of the visualization. Now I'm really confused.
it was playing one WMA file, then I double clicked another one while totem was still playing and I got the green scramble again instead of the visualization. some more info: I'm using an nvidia geforce 8600GT video card with the proprietary (closed source) driver.
