I also have a freezing problem with compiz. The only difference for me is that it usually (but not always) recovers in about 15 seconds. I don't have any problems if I turn off compiz by running "metacity --replace".
Here's my hardware: HP Pavilion dv9428nr laptop nVidia 6150 graphics AMD X2 TL-64 (2.2GHz) processor 2 Gigs of Ram - the problem can't be caused here I have tried using special bootup parameters. Using "noapic noirqdebug" seems to cut down on the frequency of the issue somewhat, but not enough. It still does it every 5 minutes or so. I wonder why the importance hasn't been decided on this bug. It seems pretty bad to me!
