I executed the requested command. I forgot to mention this - I also have tried to disable all gnome extensions, logged out and back in again. This did not change the behaviour.
However: today after starting my machine up the gnome activities overview was working again as if nothing had happened. Yesterday I restarted the laptop too, but this did not change anything in the broken behaviour.
