I agree that I should see one of these, but I don't! Why on earth is
the hard disk restarting then?

It doesn't on two other computers I've tested with the same software
(Intel and Via chipsets), so it must be chipset-specific I'd say (It's
an nForce2).

I have tried connecting another hard disk to the box, and that one
does not get restarted, of course. Only where / is, I presume.
