I'm so glad you found the solution to your problem! I often remove packages
with:
sudo apt purge libreoffice*
Since apt succeeded apt-get. Also "remove" will uninstall a package but
not remove it's config files. "purge" will do both uninstall and removal
of config files, so there was some config somewhere messing things up
for you.
