Thanks for your info.  Yes, I changed the line in /etc/default/grub 
while trying to resolve boot failures.

After making the correction you recommended:
- I ran update-grub,
- restarted, ok,
- ran Software Updater and got the error- grub-install: error: failed to 
register the EFI boot entry: Operation not permitted. Grub failed to 
install to the following devices: /dev/nvme0n1p1

Not sure what to do about this; maybe I'll be back to reinstalling the
OS.
