I'm a bit of a Linux n00b so I don't know what type of troubleshooting detail/information would be of any use, but I'm experiencing the same thing. Been struggling for a few weeks/months and tonight decided to try and use Advanced Mode at the boot up screen and chose to launch with an older Kernel, and my VGA-connected screen came to life again.
