Sorry, I think this is not a bug:
I found some SQUASHFS errors before the unionfs line:
SQUASHFS error: sb_bread.....
SQUASHFS error: unable to read page.....
...
After some googling I found some references to CD integrity issues.
Coincidentally, i have a new, nearly unused CD drive here and after building it
in, the Live-CD boots fine.
So it was a bad piece of hardware...
But why was it possible to boot the MEPIS distribution? I was able to boot it
with the old CD-drive...
(The CD was ok, a different CD drive found no errors and I installed a
different system with it)
