Your problem has two aspects. The first one is, Hardy Heron is under development, then, this is unstable. Gutsy and SCIM have problems between them...
I had some problems with SCIM and Gutsy. Then, I reinstalled all and made a little summary of steps to make it work. Those are placed int his bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/debian/+source/scim/+bug/77168/comments/7 It is related to accent problems in SCIM but I think the steps are also useful for you on your system, specially on which packages you must install.
