same for me on gutsy with vmware workstation
(VMware-workstation-6.0.2-59824.i386.tar.gz for lack of package, but the
symptom is the same).
i think the important line of the log is
Shrinking memory... ^H-^H\^H|^H/^H-^H\^H|^H/Restarting tasks ... done.
instead of the normal
Shrinking memory... ^H-^Hdone (0 pages freed)
