Good news! That worked (below), backlight is behaving normally now. Specifically what worked was disabling secure boot, some digging pointed to that being a problem for loading nvidia drivers at times.
Looking at the `XorgLog.txt` I missed what presumably tipped you off? "[ 29.166] (EE) Failed to load module "nvidia" (module does not exist, 0)" Interesting the driver (nvidia-driver-550) was reportedly installed and enabled, at least according to "Software & Updates"; I failed to further verify this however. After your comment I looked at a few things and determined it wasn't, `nvidia-smi` for instance reported driver communication issues. Forgot to check lsmod, but presumably it should have not shown me nvidia module as well. I guess this can be considered resolved, I can figure out re-enabling secure boot and setting up keys elsewhere (off topic here). While I figure that out however, is there anything on the "Software & Updates" window that could or should indicate this load failure? It was not obvious to me that this driver was actually not loading. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2081244 Title: External Monitor backlight does not turn off on blank To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/2081244/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
