Hmm, maybe something else is going on then? I have had nvidia-driver-550
"installed" for months and many reboot cycles, it seems like it was
never loading even after re-install attempts (tried switching drivers a
few times to see if it was a driver specific problem).

It seems like nvidia drivers installed through "Software & Updates"
should automatically handle secure boot keys these days and everything
should "just work" these days is my understanding correct there? If so I
have had in-consistent experiences there, at times I will be prompted to
enroll keys on reboot and other times I am not, this time around I have
not been prompted, and it seems like the only think that's working here
is disabling secure boot, but I need to dig around a bit more and
collect some more info.
