Yeah, I really don't recommend using mismatched gcc versions from what is present in the Ubuntu archive for everyday use. If you really need a newer compiler, you can use oracular, which just got released last week, or if you like living on the edge, plucky just opened for development.
Or you can always build what you need to in a VM and copy the deb over.
